hello, spriggan!

art & curiosities by Leigh Ann Gagnon

Hello all! 。◕ ‿ ◕。

It’s definitely Spring here in Maryland. Our lawn is a riot of blooming violets, ajuga, dandelions, lamium, potentilla, and more. I’ve been taking tons of photos to use as reference later for Spriggan paintings; it’s a time of year that they just love.

I’ve got a pile of seeds ready to plant: wildflowers & pollinator-friendly mixes, plus veggies. We just put together a raised bed, and I’m hoping that growing his own veg will encourage my son Griffin (3.5 yrs) to eat them. I’ll definitely be sharing more garden pics on Instagram this year, and I’d love to hear what you’re growing, too!

I’m still plugging away at getting my studio organized and usable. I never thought the process would take so long, but I underestimated what a total gut job & reno and move-in would be like with one, then two, small children! Griffin and I spend a fair amount of time down there now during Gwen’s naps, with him drawing or digging through my stuff while I try to put up shelves. I’m trying to create a space that feels friendly and welcoming, with lots of little treasures tucked everywhere.

Something that’s been interesting to deal with has been how my envisioned use of the space has changed… even though I haven’t gotten to really use it yet! When I planned my layout several years ago, I was still sculpting clay flowers for weddings and allocated a big chunk of the room to that. With small kids, and then Covid’s impact on weddings, I’m not planning to take on wedding orders for a long while. I can’t wait to get the space cleaned up, I’ll be sure to share a little tour once I do!
